Own Your Education

Having the opportunity to work with students and the educational system, I’m often feeling nostalgic for the years I spent in school. I’d say I had a relatively standard educational past, aside from the fact I spent my younger schooling days in the United States (I came to Canada for university) and as a result what you call Grade 12 I call Senior Year. When I think back to those years in school and what I learned, it’s never the essay writing, or the math tests, or the French classes that come to mind, it’s the stuff I did outside of school. When I think about when I did my most learning, it’s moments like seeing Europe on a family vacation, taking my first road trip with friends, cooking a real meal on my own (I’m not talking KD), nailing an interview that got me the job, getting fired from that job and others. Those typical school activities, reading, writing and arithmetic while important, are not the biggest moments of my education.
At FYBY News we celebrate the educational moments outside of school and encourage you to seek those opportunities out and thereby own your education. Here’s a video a friend showed me that will inspire you to own your education!
